About this test

There are roughly 195 recognised national flags, yet most people can confidently name about twenty of them. The reason is simple: the colours repeat enormously. Red appears on more than three quarters of all national flags, with white and blue close behind. What actually makes a flag distinctive is almost never its palette but its layout and its emblem.

One telling example: Nepal's flag is the only non-rectangular national flag in the world, made of two stacked triangular pennants. At the other extreme, Switzerland's is one of only two perfectly square national flags, the other being the Vatican's. These anomalies make excellent memory anchors precisely because they are unique.

The best advice for improving: learn by family rather than country by country. The Nordic crosses cover Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, which differ only in colours and borders. The pan-African colours — green, yellow, red — account for a dozen states. Pan-Arab flags work with black, white, green and red. Master three families and you already cover a quarter of the world.
