About this test

The idea of a spirit animal or totem comes from several unrelated traditions, and the English word totem itself passed from Algonquian into English in the eighteenth century. This test doesn't claim to reconstruct those traditions or borrow their authority: it uses the animal as an image, because an image stays in memory far better than an adjective.

What makes it different from the usual "what animal are you" quiz is the angle. Nothing here asks how you behave in meetings. It asks what you do with anger, with memory, with your empty stretches and with what you've already lost. The eight animals were chosen for what they say about a survival mode, not a social style.

Every portrait ends with a warning, because a totem is not a compliment: the heron's patience looks like avoidance, the snake's shedding looks like flight, the bear's withdrawal looks like abandonment. Read the end of your result at least as carefully as the start.

How it works

The fifteen questions are distributed so all eight animals are reachable, with none favoured by construction. Affinities are added up, and the percentage breakdown shows your mix: one main totem, plus one or two secondary ones that mostly surface under pressure.
